Success in law school is rarely the result of studying for long hours every day. It usually comes from small habits that are followed consistently over a long period of time. A student who regularly reads the law, keeps track of important developments and learns from mistakes will often be better prepared than someone who studies intensely only before examinations. There is also no single definition of a “successful” law student. Good grades may be important, but so are research skills, writing ability, legal awareness, communication and the ability to manage different responsibilities. The following five habits can help students build a strong foundation during law school. 1. Read the law regularly, not just before exams One of the strongest habits a law student can develop is regular reading. This does not mean spending six hours every day reading textbooks. It means staying connected with the law even when there is no examination immediately approaching. Read the relevant Bare Act when studying a subject, follow important judgments and occasionally read a commentary or legal article to understand a difficult issue in greater depth. You can also make it a habit to read one important judgment or legal develo pment every few days. Regular reading makes a noticeable difference over time. Sections become easier to locate, legal terminology becomes familiar and judgments become less intimidating. More importantly, you stop treating legal study as something that begins a few weeks befor e examinations. 2. Prepare your own legal notes Law school involves dealing with a large amount of information. If you depend entirely on different notebooks, screenshots, PDFs and last -minute class notes, revision can become unnecessarily difficult. Develop a system that works for you. Your notes do not have to be lengthy. For each important topic, try to record the relevant provision, the key principle, important cases and any exception or controversy that you need to remember. For judgments, a short format can be particularly useful: facts, issue, decision, reasoning and ratio decidendi. For statutory provisions, note the ingredients, exceptions and important interpretations. The purpose of making notes is not to rewrite your textbook. It is to create a reliable revision resource in your own language. 3. Learn to research before you need to Legal research is not a skill that suddenly appears when you receive your first internship assignment. It develops through practice. Whenever you encounter an unfamiliar legal issue, try finding the answer yourself before immediately asking someone else. Start with the relevant legislation and then look for judgments interpreting the provision. Learn how to use reliable legal databases and government sources, and develop the habit of checking whether a judgment has been followed, distinguished or overruled. Research also teaches you an important professional habit: do not stop at the first answer you find. The first search result may provide a useful starting point, but it may not represent the current legal position. Good research involves checking the source, understanding the context and verifying whether the authority is still good law. As you become more comfortable with research, assignments, moots, internships and academic writing all become easier. 4. Keep track of your commitments Law students often have several things happening at the same time: classes, examinations, assignments, internships, moots, societies, competitions and personal commitments. Without some form of organisation, it is easy to miss deadlines or end up completin g everything at the last minute. Maintain a simple calendar, planner or digital task list. Record important submission dates, examination schedules, internship commitments and application deadlines. At the beginning of each week, identify the tasks that genuinely need your attention. Do not fill every hour of your schedule. Leave some flexibility for unexpected work. Successful students are not necessarily those who are busy all the time. They are often the students who know what needs to be done, when it needs to be done and what can reasonably be postponed or declined. 5. Learn from feedback and mistakes Law school gives you numerous opportunities to receive criticism. A professor may mark down your answer, a moot judge may point out weaknesses in your argument, an editor may reject your article or an internship supervisor may ask you to redo a piece of work. It is easy to take such feedback personally, particularly when you have put significant effort into something. Instead, learn to separate criticism of your work from criticism of you as a person. If a professor says that your answer lacks analysis, work on analysis. If a senior tells you that your drafting is unclear, look at how you can improve the structure and language. If you lose a moot because your arguments were poorly organised, identify wh at went wrong before preparing for the next one. A legal career involves constant review and correction. Developing the ability to accept feedback early can therefore become one of the most valuable habits you carry beyond law school. Success in law School is built gradually There is no secret formula for becoming a successful law student. Some students will have better grades, some will have more internships and others will excel in moots, research or writing. Comparing these achievements individually can give a misleading picture of progress. What matters more is whether you are developing habits that make you better over time. The Latin maxim Repetitio est mater studiorum , which says repetition is the mother of learning, captures an important part of legal education. You become comfortable with the law by returning to it repeatedly, applying it to different problems and gradually improving the way you understand it.
